Oops! Boston airport security finds gun TSA worker ‘mistakenly’ packed in lunch bag

A Boston TSA worker packed more than the usual sandwich and chips for lunch last week.

Police in Londonderry, New Hampshire, responded to a weapons offense call Friday just before 10 a.m. at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport, the New Hampshire Union Leader reported.

“The firearm was detected on Friday at the security checkpoint when a TSA employee underwent screening at the beginning of their shift, Transportation Security Administration spokesman Mike McCarthy told WBZ-TV.

“The firearm was located in a sort of ‘lunchpail,’ where the individual had packed a meal in a sort of backpack, McCarthy said.

Authorities interviewed the unnamed employee, who said the gun was mistakenly packed with the lunch. Londonderry police didn’t respond to the Union Leader’s request for the worker’s name. It wasn’t immediately clear, based on reports, whether the firearm was loaded or not.

Were charges filed against the employee?

Police didn’t bring charges against the individual.

“As far as we can determine, there was no harm intended,” McCarthy told the Union Leader.

The TSA spokesman couldn’t comment on the possible disciplinary action or fines against the employee, according to the Union Leader.

“It’s a personnel matter, McCarthy said.

According to the Union Leader, regular travelers caught with guns in their carry-on bags at security checkpoints are subject to fines ranging from $500 to $2,000.
