Congressional Baseball Game Honors Hospitalized Representative Steve Scalise

What a fitting tribute…

As we reported, on Wednesday in Virginia, a gunman opened fire on a group of GOP congressmen and aides — including House Whip Steve Scalise — who were practicing for Thursday’s Congressional Baseball Game. The 51-year-old was shot in the hip, and remains hospitalized.

On Thursday, the game went on as planned, but took on a different meaning in the wake of the horrific shooting.

Prior to the match between the Democrats and the Republicans, both teams gathered at second base to pray. As seen on Twitter:

Additionally, the politicians wore Louisiana State University hats to honor Scalise, a Louisiana Republican.

Capital Police officer and hero David J. Bailey — who responded to Wednesday’s attack and suffered a minor injury — threw the first pitch.

Although the Democrats beat the Republicans by 11-2, Democratic manager and Pennsylvania Representative Mike Doyle gave the winning trophy back to the GOP to put in Scalise’s office.

There were 24,959 tickets sold, and over $1 million was raised for charity.
