The Amish make the best pie in the world, and we have the recipe to prove it

Shoofly pie is a traditional dessert in Pennsylvania Dutch communities. It has been described as “like a coffee cake with a gooey molasses bottom.” Its ingredients, such as brown sugar and molasses, make it an ideal choice for people who like a lot of sweetness.

Why is it called shoofly pie? Its super sweet ingredients often attract flies while the pie cools, meaning the cooks have to “shoo” away the pests.

This shoofly pie recipe from Not So Humble Pie calls for King Syrup or Golden Barrel Table Syrup, both of which are not available anywhere. However, there is an easy substitution.

The blogger describes this sweet creation as “a bit of a cross between pecan pie (minus the pecans), sticky toffee pudding and gingerbread.” If you’re tempted by that (and who wouldn’t be?), this Amish treat may be perfect for you!
