The father of a dead U.S. soldier had some hard-hitting words after Donald Trump disrespected his family

Khizr and Ghazala Khan and their three sons moved to Silver Spring, Md., from Pakistan to escape military rule. They were looking for freedom. Much inspired by Thomas Jefferson, their son Humayun decided to join the Army.

Just four months after Humayun arrived in Iraq for duty, he was killed by a car bomber.

Hurt by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s discriminatory rhetoric against Muslim Americans and repeated calls to ban Muslim immigration, the Khans took to the DNC to express themselves. They spoke of their son and his sacrifice, as well as the beauty of unity in the country.

Many criticized his speech, including Trump.

Sitting down with John King on CNN’s Sunday show “State of the Union,” the grieving father addressed Trump’s criticism.

Trump insinuated that Khan’s wife had very little to say because of their Muslim faith. Khan responded, saying that two things were necessary to be a leader: having a moral compass and empathy.

Khan said that he did not believe that Trump’s divisive rhetoric qualified him to be president. He also called him ignorant. He said that his wife was silent because she could not hold herself together when she saw her son’s picture. Contrary to Trump’s suggestion, she spoke in an MSNBC interview with her husband.

The father pleaded with Trump’s family to council him on empathy. He asked Republicans to ignore Trump’s rhetoric. Khan said that he received support from several Republicans concerned with their party’s nominee.

Khan had another message: “We reject all violence. We are faithful, patriotic, [have] undivided loyalty to this country. We reject all terrorism.”

He said that Trump’s ignorance did not take into account that most Muslims also reject and hate terror.

Trump’s attitude has cost him the support of several Republicans and has attracted the criticism of others. Some Republicans have stated that they will only support Trump should he decide to change his tune.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich did not attend the RNC, despite its Ohio location. Kasich expressed hesitation to endorse Trump since dropping out of the race for the White House. On several occasions, Kasich has said that Trump must become more presidential in order to receive Kasich’s support.

When House Speaker Paul Ryan initially cited Trump’s behavior as one of the reasons why he was not ready to back Trump, the presidential nominee shamed him on Twitter. Though he eventually decided that he was committed to working with Trump, Ryan has spent his summer criticizing many of Trump’s statements as divisive.

Khizr and his wife still have the Gold Star Banner in honor of their son. They continue his work by counseling soldiers.
