Trump changes his mind on the minimum wage again, admitting his idea isn’t “very Republican”

Donald Trump departed from his previous claim that American wages are “too high.” In an interview with Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly, the Republican presidential nominee said “it’s not very Republican to say,” but he would leave the minimum wage in place and “raise it somewhat” because “you need to help people.”

When pressed on a dollar figure, Trump said he would say $10 an hour, but he wants the states to make the deals on wages.

Monday night, Bernie Sanders told Democratic National Convention delegates that Trump wanted to lower the wage, which Trump told O’Reilly was a lie.

Trump prefers an incentive-based system.

“Nobody has ever heard of this before and a lot of companies do it,” Trump said. “By raising it, they already get the incentive. No, I believe it should be raised, but when Bernie Sanders said I want to go less than what the minimum wage, I mean, honestly, Bill, these people are lying so much.”

During a debate last year, Trump said taxes and wages were too high.

“We’re not going to be able to compete against the world,” he said in November 2015. “I hate to say it, but we have to leave it the way it is. People have to go out, they have to work really hard, and they have to get into that upper stratum. But we cannot do this if we are going to compete with the rest of the world, we just can’t do it.”

In May, he switched positions, telling CNN that he would be “open” to doing something about raising wages.

“I’m actually very different from most Republicans” on the issue, he told CNN.

Trump’s latest stance on the minimum wage left some confused.
