Connecticut promises millions of dollars to Planned Parenthood if Congress blocks federal funding

The state of Connecticut would reimburse a regional Planned Parenthood affiliate if Congress strips the national organization of its federal funds, the website CT News Junkie reported Thursday.

According to the report, during a visit to a Planned Parenthood clinic in Connecticut, Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman (D) said that her state would grant $6 million to Planned Parenthood of Southern New England if Congress blocks Planned Parenthood from receiving federal Medicaid funds.

“If and when we get a budget there’s language in there that says we’ll do as much as we can, if Planned Parenthood is defunded,” Wyman said, CT News Junkie said.

Wyman confirmed the report in a tweet, describing Planned Parenthood of Southern New England as an “important healthcare partner.”

Malloy and the state’s Democratic Party also confirmed the report on Twitter:

Meg Green, a spokeswoman for Malloy, told CT News Junkie, “In Connecticut, Planned Parenthood provides tens of thousands of women and families access to low-cost, quality health care — from family planning services to critical cancer screenings.”

“That’s why Gov. Malloy felt strongly it was important to include a provision in his budget to address a shortfall should federal dollars be restricted,” Green said. “We will continue to advocate for such a provision.”

According to its website, Planned Parenthood of Southern New England has 17 clinics in Connecticut.

Planned Parenthood is the nation’s largest abortion provider.
